Adulting 101

You only live once…YOLO

What is adulting? Adulting is being responsible; when you are an adult you have certain things you must do to survive. Like doing laundry or going to work. It is not that these responsibilities are bad, it’s just that we remember of the good ol’ days when we were kids and didn’t have a care in the world. Ironic isn’t it? As a kid, you can’t wait to get grow up, but when you grow up you think“if only I could be a kid again”. Being an adult is not all negative it just depends on your state of mind. But there are two main levels of adulting; initial level and advanced level.

1. Initial Level Adulting

At this level, you get hit with real-life responsibilities. You start to realize
that you can’t contemplate what you’re going to do when you grow up because you are grown up. As a kid your goals sounded like this  “when I turn 22 I’m going to have my own house” or “when I’m 21 I’m going will be married with two kids” or “when I turn (insert an age you thought was old as a kid) I’m going to have (insert the latest car)”. Your childhood feels like forever, then boom! You’re an adult. You talked a big game about what you would do when you grew up, not realizing that adulthood was lurking behind the corner. Then, it hits you out of the blue. You start to understand those things your parents use to tell you. Even worse you notice that you’re becoming your parents.

That awkward moment when you see your parents as people and realize they are still trying to figure it all out just like you.

I call this level initial level adulting because it’s all new to you. You could be broke. You could be sitting on ideas, but not taking action. You could be taking action, but haven’t achieved success.  Life is passing you by, you may feel stuck at this level, or you may feel free at least. One thing is for sure about this level, things are changing and they are changing fast. Then, there is the next level of adulting – advance level.

2. Advance Level Adulting

At this level you’re super disciplined, you’re eating healthy, working out, starting or growing your business. You are doing good in your career of choice, you have free time to do the things you love, you’re traveling and doing all those things that you always wanted to do. You don’t care about what people think of you, you’re making money, you’re successful, you have the things you want in life, you’re mature, you’re on time, you get stuff done, you rock!

You’re not perfect and you understand no one is perfect. You are constantly trying to better yourself and grow. You love yourself, you have healthy relationships, you stay true to yourself, and most importantly you are happy with your life. You understand that happiness starts with you and you don’t expect anyone to make you happy. Since you have so much love for yourself, you have enough to give to others. You give off positive vibes and people what to be around you. You are the epitome of living life to it’s fullest.

It is possible to be at different levels in different areas of your life. You could have a great career or successful business, but your romantic relationships suffer. Age has nothing to do with the level your on. There are some who had to grow up fast and be responsible for themselves at a young age. While others are physically grown yet still are dependent on others. This is less about age and more about your mental state. How do you think about yourself? How do you see yourself? Self-reflection is only one of the keys to get what you want out of life. We have many ideas and concepts about what happiness means and how to achieve happiness, but no one knows for sure. The only thing certain in life is death, so why not live the way you want. As the “great prophet” Drake said yolo…you only live once…so why not choose to live a happy life.
