I have been MIA for a while and I left off with a natural hair post. I have not forgotten about it. Actually, writing on this blog is always on my to-do list, but more urgent task always pop up. Anyway enough of that.
I went back to the DMV for the holidays. For those of you who do not know the DMV stands for D.C, Maryland, and Virginia and includes the surrounding areas near D.C. There are D.C. natives who police those who say they are from the DMV, but even airports that are far from D.C. claim they are in D.C. Take Dulles for example, it is located 26 miles from the city and if you look up airports in D.C., this is one of three to pop up.
I claim to be from the DC area for those people who live outside the US and those Americas who forget the 50 states. On the other hand, I am proud of my upbringing in Prince George’s (PG) County, Maryland. Honestly, growing up in PG I secretly wanted to be from DC because it’s more urban and DC natives have a reputation of being unique and carefree. They do not care what anyone says or thinks of them. Alas, I’m from Maryland and I’m sticking to it.
The benefits of living in Maryland or surrounding areas is that it doesn’t take long going into big cities. From where I lived D.C. was about a 10 minute drive, Philly was about a 2 hour drive, and New York was about a 4 hour drive. It is the perfect location to go in and out of the city without actually paying city prices to live there. Me -I love the business of the city and that’s why I liked going to DC so much. I also like going to the Smithsonian’s in D.C, which people come from all over the world to visit and I practically grew up next door. I would often visit the portrait gallery mainly because it was near China Town and near the station I needed to get home. Since I lived so close to D.C., I had the opportunity to go inside the White House three times. Once when I was an elementary student and twice as a production assistantfor twoo PBS events called In Performance at the White Houseand the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize. This was a time when I really wanted to break into the television industry, but as you can see I took a different route. Maybe I’ll talk more about this in another blog.
I decided to go back to the places I use to visit. I also had the bright idea to bring my carribean boyfriend with me. He had no concept of cold until he came and even then, it wasn’t cold cold. I was happy that it was not freezing because I knew we would spend a day in outdoors and I did not want him to freeze to death. The next day after Christmas, the first thing we did was go to the African American museum. After that, we visited the Washington Monument and took pictures. We were going to walk to the Lincoln Memorial, but why walk when you could use Capital ride share bikes. Now, this is something I always wanted to do, but never took the time to do it. We rode to the Lincoln Memorial and back to the train station. I was happy that I finally got to ride bikes in the city and especially doing it with bae.
I really wanted to go to the portrait gallery, but I had to get back to Maryland. So we decided to just eat pizza and go. We went to &Pizza, my favorite pizza spot. I like this pizza place so much because you can get whatever toppings you want and pay one price. So if you want hot sauce mixed with Bar B Que sauce, cheese, pineapple, shrimp, bacon, red peppers, and chili sauce, then you can have it. That’s what my boyfriend ordered, only the shrimp was extra. I got hot sauce and regular sauce mixed, cheese, pepperoni, sausage, red peppers, jalapeno’s, onion, garlic oil, and parmesan cheese. Both pizzas were really good. After that day my boyfriend could not stop talking about it their pizza.
That was the one and only day we spent in D.C. We went one night to go to The Park. After getting stuck in traffic and trying to find parking for 20 minutes, they did not let us in because they claimed to not accept foreign ID’s. That was a blow, but after that, we just chilled at home. I was happy to show him a glimpse of the places I like and that he got to meet my family. All in all, it was a nice trip.
What about you? Do you like visiting the city? What cities are your favorite or on your to visit list?
